The case against an Ontario Provincial Police officer charged with theft and breach of trust has been put over until early next month.

Kara Darnley did not appear in a Collingwood courtroom for her first appearance, Tuesday morning, but was represented by her lawyer, Theresa Simone.

Darnley, a constable with the Huronia West OPP detachment, was charged in July with obstructing justice, theft under $5,000, possession under $5,000, and three counts of criminal breach of trust.

The 27-year-old received the nickname 'Hot Cop' last spring when she appeared as a contestant on Wipe-Out Canada, a reality show that puts contestants through a series of obstacles.

She was eliminated in the second round.

Darnley is scheduled to appear in Collingwood court on Oct. 2, 2012.

An OPP officer dubbed “hot cop” on a reality TV show faces criminal charges after an internal investigation.

Const. Kara Darnley, 27, was suspended without pay after being charged Thursday with three counts of criminal breach of trust, obstructing justice, theft under $5,000 and possession under $5,000.

Darnley’s charges were the result of an early-morning investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police professional standards bureau and Criminal Investigation branch.

Darnley, an officer with the Huronia West detachment for the last five years, appeared on Wipeout Canada, a TV show that pits contestants against each other in an array of obstacle courses.

Near the start of the episode, Darnley dances in front of the camera in a police uniform with handcuffs as commentators call her “hot cop.”

Later in the show, Darnley says, “Prepare to be disciplined cause I’m gonna take you downtown.”

Darley’s bio on the show’s website says that she hates drinking water and that her fellow officers call her a “midget” at work because of her height.

She made it to the second round of the competition.

Darnley is scheduled to appear in a Collingwood court on Sept. 11.

WASAGA BEACH, ON — An Ontario Provincial Police officer faces several charges, including theft and breach of trust.

Kara Darnley, a constable with the Huronia West OPP detachment — which serves the central Ontario resort community of Wasaga Beach, and Clearview and Springwater townships — was charged Wednesday morning with obstructing justice, theft under $5,000, possession under $5,000, and three counts of criminal breach of trust.

She was charged following a joint investigation by the OPP's Professional Standards Bureau, and the Criminal Investigation Branch. Darnley has been suspended from duty, with pay.

Sgt. Peter Leon, the media relations officer for Central Region OPP, was unable to comment on when the incidents are alleged to have taken place, or if Darnley was on duty when the crimes were allegedly committed.

“It was a fairly lengthy investigation that led to the arrest this morning,” said Sgt. Leon.

Darnley has been with the OPP for five years and currently resides in Wasaga Beach.

The 27-year-old appeared last spring on Wipe-Out Canada, a reality show that puts contestants through a series of obstacles.

She was eliminated in the second round.

Darnley is scheduled to appear in the Collingwood court on Sept. 11, 2012.

Provincial police say a five-year veteran of the force is facing criminal charges.

The 27-year-old female officer is charged with six counts, including obstructing justice, criminal breach of trust and theft under $5,000.

Const. Kara Darnley was assigned to the Huronia West detachment near Wasaga Beach and was arrested Wednesday morning.

Police say Darnley is suspended with pay and has a scheduled court appearance in Collingwood in September.

Kara Darnley, a constable with the Huronia West OPP detachment, was charged in July with obstructing justice, theft under $5,000, possession under $5,000, and three counts of criminal breach of trust.

The 27-year-old’s case has come before Collingwood courts for the third time but the officer has yet to appear.

The court received disclosure on Tuesday, Oct. 23, which required adjourning the case until a later date.

“Disclosure is quite significant and much larger than what we usually see,” said Darnley’s lawyer.

Darnley received the nickname “Hot Cop” when she appeared last spring on the reality TV show Wipe-Out Canada.

Darnley is scheduled to appear in Collingwood court on Nov. 20.

The Wasaga Sun continues to follow the court proceedings of Huronia West OPP Const. Kara Darnely and former beachfront developer Dov Levy.

Both cases will be back before a Collingwood provincial court judge on April 2.

This morning, Darnley’s lawyer requested another three weeks to review a large amount of evidence. It is the fourth such request.

The judge said hopefully a trial date would be set at that time.

In July, 28-year-old Darnley, a Wasaga Beach resident, was charged with three counts of breach of trust, obstructing justice, theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

An outside prosecutor and judge will be brought in for the trial because of Darnley’s police association.

Having gone through a pre-trial earlier this month, Levy’s case will also be spoken to on April 2.

Levy, 42, of Thornhill, is charged with theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000.

The bankrupt developer of Wasaga's main beach, was arrested on August 7.

He is charged with theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000 relating to the misappropriation of insurance money paid out after the fire that razed Main Street in Wasaga Beach on Nov. 30, 2007.

The insurance settlement, according to police, was in excess of $1.2-million.

The charges are the result of a yearlong investigation involving the OPP Crime Unit from Huronia West detachment, Collingwood and The Blue Mountains.

The 27-year-old's case came before Collingwood court for the ninth time on Tuesday, April 2, but the officer has yet to appear.

Collingwood lawyer Scott Thomson, acting as an agent, said Darley’s lawyer Morris Manning agreed with an outside crown to set a judicial pretrial date.

WASAGA BEACH – Const. Kara Darnley of the Huronia West OPP detachment in Wasaga Beach was arrested and charged Wednesday, July 4.

The 27-year-old woman, a member of the OPP for the last five years, was charged with Obstruct Justice, three counts of Criminal Breach of Trust, Theft Under $5,000 and Possession Under $5,000.

Darnley has been suspended from duty with pay and is scheduled to make her first appearance in the Ontario Court of Justice, Collingwood, on Sept. 11.

Darnley was awarded the Commissioner's letter of commendation last month in recognition of her professionalism when confronted by an armed man with a history of mental illness in June 2011.

Sgt. Peter Leon, an OPP spokesperson, would not say what lead to the investigation and charges.

"I can't get into that. That will come out in court proceedings," he said.

However, he did say the investigation started in February. It was headed by members of the OPP's Professional Standards Bureau, along with officers from the Criminal Investigation Branch.

"Obviously this is something that's very unfortunate when it happens," Leon said. "Although as an organization we hold our members accountable. It's very important that we appear transparent at all times with respect to investigations such as this."

He added the matter will now be dealt with in court, "just like any other citizen and we just have to let the process take place."

Asked what these types of incidents do to police morale and Leon said, "Obviously it doesn't matter how big or small the detachment is, it's something that does impact them. But we have to understand that officers that work at the Huronia West OPP are dedicated and committed and we certainly see that day in and day out, especially when we have long weekends like we just had."

A trial date has been set for Huronia West OPP Const. Kara Darnley.

The trial will be in Barrie next year. Two weeks have been set aside for the trial: June 2-6 and June 16-20. A status hearing has also been scheduled in Barrie court on March 12.

Huronia West OPP Const. Kara Darnley’s preliminary hearing continues, beginning June 2.

The hearing will take place in Midland June 2-6 and continues in Barrie with the same judge June 16-20.

The hearing is to conclude whether or not there is enough evidence to proceed to trial.

In July 2012, the Wasaga Beach resident was charged with three counts of breach of trust, obstructing justice, theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

BARRIE - A Wasaga Beach OPP officer faces accusations she copied confidential documents about her boyfriend while unaware they were fake.

OPP Const. Kara Darnley has pleaded not guilty to charges of obstructing justice and breach of trust.

Her superiors set up undercover surveillance on her in what was called an “integrity play” because they were concerned about her honesty, Crown attorney Jason Nicol told a jury Tuesday.

The test was triggered after a 2012 incident where Darnley copied witness statements connected to a domestic trial without permission and gave them to the witnesses before the trial, court heard.

“My concern was that these witness statements were shared by Kara Darnley and that is a no-no. We can’t do that stuff,” testified lead investigator, Det.-Sgt. Jason Lloyd. “It is confidential information.”

So to test her, a team of undercover officers planted a bright yellow folder marked “confidential” in big black letters with the names of her boyfriend and three of his friends, and left it on top of a photocopier where a hidden camera was set up at the Wasaga Beach detachment, court heard.

Inside the folder were “faked” documents stating the men were under surveillance for drug trafficking.

“We wanted to see how Kara would react if she discovered this information,” Lloyd said. When Darnley found the folder, court was told, she looked through it and photographed the documents. Another female officer was set up to befriend Darnley, and pretended to stand on lookout by the door.

But the hidden video camera ran out of batteries, so a second “integrity play” was set up, the jury heard. This time a bankers box with more information about the same men was left in an office. On the hidden video, Darnley is seen going through the box to take photographs of more documents, court heard.

She is suspended with pay pending the outcome of the trial.

Wasaga Beach OPP constables Kara Darnley and Heidi Fisher were like two peas in a pod.

They did patrols together. They worked out together. They went on shopping sprees together. They even looked a little alike except one is a blond, the other a brunette.

A big difference was Fisher wore a wire that recorded everything Darnley said to her in May and June of 2012.

Darnley had no idea the officer she had become so close to was actually working undercover in what police called an "integrity play" to test Darnley's mettle as a police officer.

She's now on trial after pleading not guilty to obstructing justice and breach of trust for allegedly copying confidential documents and sharing them with her boyfriend.

Police were concerned because they suspected Darnley's boyfriend had friends who used marijuana and cocaine. So they launched the integrity play and enlisted Fisher to befriend Darnley.

Then they planted a bright yellow folder on the office photocopier that contained details of a phony surveillance operation targeting her boyfriend's pals.

Fisher says Darnley noticed the folder, read it and photographed the fake documents with her cellphone while Fisher pretended to be a lookout.

"What should I do?" Darnley can be heard saying in a panicked voice in a recording played for the jury. "If I tell Jody, he will tell his friends and that's not good."

Fisher says she followed Darnley around for days to see what she would do with the cellphone pictures.

"You have to tell Jody," Fisher says. "I'm here for you, I got your back."

"Awe, you're just like a mom," Darnley tells her and the two women giggle.

Darnley repeatedly tells Fisher she's upset that her boyfriend's pals do drugs.

"I told Jody not to hang around with them anymore," she tells Fisher.

She also says she's terrified police may have associated her with the friends, even though she didn't like them.

"Is there anything they will find out about you?" Fisher asks.

"No, there's nothing illegal or anything," Darnley answers. "I'm not involved in anything."

Fisher says Darnley eventually told her boyfriend about the surveillance operation. None of the allegations have been proven in court.

The trial continues.
