Almaguin, Parry Sound municipalities vow to combat high OPP bills

Viewed by many Ontario communities as an untenable financial burden, OPP costs continue to rise. Though often justified in the name of “public safety,” these escalating expenses raise a critical question: Who will rein in these costs, and at what price?

Almaguin, Parry Sound municipalities vow to combat high OPP bills

Post by Michael Jack »

ALMAGUIN – District municipalities are banding together to tackle rising policing costs.

At the District of Parry Sound Municipal Association spring meeting on April 29, hosted by the Town of Kearney, east and west Parry Sound municipalities voted to support a resolution combatting increasing Ontario Provincial Police levies.

“Whereas municipal policing costs have increased tremendously, to a point where it has put a high burden on taxpayers, therefore be it resolved that DPSMA arrange for a meeting with the minister to review the new funding model,” states the resolution, which was moved by McMurrich/Monteith Coun. Cliff Strickland and seconded by Magnetawan Mayor Sam Dunnett.

“We’re not making enough noise,” Strickland said at the meeting.

“We need to at least get the attention of the government because we’re not getting it right now.”

Originally, the resolution also included a line to “encourage municipalities to not make payment [of OPP bills] until a meeting is arranged,” however, the townships voted to exclude that stipulation.

“I agree 100 per cent, except I believe we can make noise without not paying our bills,” said Township of Perry Mayor Norm Hofstetter.

Callander Mayor — and Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) representative for the area — Hec Lavigne suggested partnering with FONOM to set up a meeting. The idea was well received, though most in attendance wanted to ensure a meeting is set up with ministry officials before the municipal association’s next meeting in October.

“We need to make a stance on this,” said Kearney Mayor Lance Thrale.
