Eastern Ontario OPP officer charged with criminal harassment

An Ontario Provincial Police officer working out of a detachment in the east region has been charged with criminal harassment.

The OPP's professional standards bureau launched an investigation into the provincial constable in September 2014 after a complaint was filed.

The 37-year-old officer was arrested four months later on Jan. 29. He is charged with two counts of criminal harassment and one count of unlawfully being in a dwelling.

He is scheduled to appear in court in Renfrew on March 25.

The man is a 13-year member of the OPP and is "presently on leave," OPP said in a media release.

His name is not being released in order to protect the identity of the victim.

What a pathetic and lame excuse for not releasing the name of the officer. When the OPP charge ordinary members of the public with criminal harassment and domestic assaults all too frequently they release their names. However, when it comes down to members of their own force being charged they conveniently withhold their names. Also, I bet this officer has been suspended from duty with pay and will also get his legal fees covered by the Ontario Provincial Police Association. That yet again reminds of the ending of the George Orwell's allegorical novel Animal Farm, where pigs which comprised the government proclaimed the following: "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others". No wonder some refer to cops as pigs.

A Renfrew OPP constable has had two charges of criminal harassment and one charge of being in a dwelling unlawfully withdrawn. He has been released on a peace bond.

Const. Sean Smith was charged in January after the Ontario Provincial Police Professional Standards Bureau launched an investigation into a September 2014 complaint of criminal harassment against the police officer.

The 13-year veteran of the OPP was put on leave after the criminal charges were laid.

A police spokesperson said Friday that “his court process is complete and he is at work.” But OPP spokesperson Kristine Rae would not say what his current job assignment is.

Renfrew OPP constable Sean Smith has had two charges of criminal harassment and one charge of being in a dwelling unlawfully withdrawn. He has been released on a peace bond.

What this actually means is that OPP constable Sean Smith is guilty of the offence and plead guilty by agreeing to the peace bond in return for the withdrawal of the charges. If this criminal violates the peace bond he will then be answering to those previous criminal charges on top of any new charges against him. HE WAS GUILTY
