Conditional discharge for OPP officer charged with assault

Post by Michael Jack »

A Quinte West OPP officer charged following a Special Investigations Unit probe won’t spend any time in custody but has been sentenced to a conditional discharge and probation for a 12-month period.

Constable Jeffrey Szijarto was charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm in connection with an incident in Trenton in late 2023 that left a man with serious injuries.

Last month, Szijarto pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of common assault.

In addition to the conditional discharge and probation, Justice Jon-Jo Douglas of the Ontario Court of Justice assigned multiple statutory obligations, particularly to keep the peace and be of good behaviour and to have no contact or communication with the victim.

He is also to provide proof to probation in six months time that he has been continuing counselling.

It was also recommended that Szijarto get additional use-of-force training to better assist him in his career, should that career path remain open to him after adjudication by the appropriate authorities.
