The province’s police watchdog agency is investigating following a collision in Welland involving an Ontario Provincial Police cruiser and a motorcycle, which sent a man to hospital with serious injuries.
On Friday, at about 9:40 p.m., an officer in a police vehicle from the Niagara Detachment of the OPP highway safety division was involved in a collision with a motorcycle on Highway 58A near Reaker Road.
The motorcyclist was transported to hospital with serious injuries that police said were not life-threatening.
The officer did not sustain any injuries.
Highway 58A in the westbound and eastbound lanes between Rusholme, Netherby and Reaker roads was closed for much of the day Saturday as the investigation continued.
As the Special Investigations Unit is involved, the OPP said in a statement it would not be providing any further information.
The SIU is an independent provincial agency that investigates conduct by police officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

SIU invokes mandate in Welland following collision involving police vehicle
The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate following a collision involving a police vehicle on Highway 58A in Welland.
On Friday, Sept. 5 at approximately 9:40 p.m., an officer in a police vehicle from the Niagara Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Highway Safety Division was involved in a collision with a motorcycle on Highway 58A and Reaker Road.
The motorcycle rider was transported to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. The officer did not sustain any injuries.
While the on-scene investigation continues, Highway 58A is temporarily closed in the westbound and eastbound lanes between Rusholme Road and Netherby Road. Reaker Road is closed between Highway 58A and Netherby Road.
