An Ontario Provincial Police officer fatally shot a 26-year-old man who allegedly stabbed him during an interaction in Orillia Thursday afternoon, the province’s police watchdog said.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said OPP officers were called to a home on Barrie Road around 2 p.m. for a disturbance.
Officers arrived and later located a man who matched a description of the individual involved in the disturbance near Cochrane Street and Matchedash Street South, the SIU said.
Kristy Denette, a spokesperson for the SIU, told reporters at the scene that there was an interaction between police and the man, who had an edged weapon.
She said an officer was stabbed, and the officer discharged his firearm at the man multiple times. Denette added that another officer deployed his conducted energy weapon during the interaction.
The man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The SIU said a post-mortem examination is scheduled for Friday.
Denette said investigators haven’t located the man’s next of kin.
Meanwhile, the officer who was stabbed sustained serious injuries and was also transported to the hospital, where he is in stable condition.
The SIU has assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.
“It’s always concerning when there’s a discharge of firearm and obviously when there’s an individual who’s deceased. So that prompts the SIU to investigate,” Denette said.
“So, there will be a thorough investigation. Those investigations we aim to complete within 120 days and there will be updates at the conclusion of the investigation.”
The SIU is asking anyone with information to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.

SIU investigation continues in Orillia, Ont after officer-related shooting
Police remained on scene throughout the day on Friday where on Thursday an OPP officer was stabbed responding to a call in Orillia.
The incident happened just before 2 p.m. on Thursday, with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) invoking a mandate after the shooting.
On Thursday the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to a residence on Barrie Road.
Once officers arrived, they located the suspect on Cochrane Street and Matchedash Street South, where the SIU says he was armed with an edged weapon.
OPP say the responding officer was stabbed during the encounter and suffered serious injuries, while adding that the officer discharged their firearm and as a result, the person was pronounced dead at the hospital.
On Friday OPP commissioner Thomas Carrique released a statement confirming that the officer had been released from hospital and is now recovering at home.

Statement regarding incident in Orillia on November 7, 2024.
Yesterday, an Ontario Provincial Police officer sustained serious injuries in the line of duty in Orillia. The officer has since been released from the hospital and is now recovering at home. I want to express my gratitude to the officers and Provincial Communications Centre members who assisted our officer, as well as the medical professionals who provided care.
Our thoughts are with everyone involved in or impacted by this incident.
Every day, officers put themselves at risk to keep their communities safe, often facing unpredictable situations. Their dedication to protecting others in the face of such uncertainty is admirable and speaks volumes about their sense of responsibility and duty.
Any attacks against police officers are completely unacceptable, as they undermine the safety and security of our communities and the vital role law enforcement plays in protecting us all.
On behalf of the OPP, I would like to sincerely thank the public and our policing colleagues for their support during this time. As the Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate, we will not be providing further information.
A video provided to CTV News shows several police officers on the scene taking the suspect into custody while other officer tended to the injured officer.
OPP say at least one home caught part of the incident on video surveillance and that video has been handed over to police.
According to police, the officer is expected to survive but no other details are being released on their condition.
The SIU says five investigators, three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
An autopsy was scheduled for Friday in Toronto.
