Breaches of Ontario’s provincial laws by officers who are supposed to enforce them. Incidents range from violations of the Highway Traffic Act to the Police Services Act, raising questions about accountability.

Port Credit detachment OPP officer charged in Brampton crash

Post by Michael Jack »

An OPP officer has been charged with two traffic offences in relation to a multi-vehicle crash on Steeles Avenue West this past April that sent four people to hospital.

The crash happened just after 11 a.m. at Lancashire Lane, just west of Hurontario Street on April 1.

The officer was driving an unmarked vehicle and was assisting another OPP officer in pursuit of a vehicle that had failed to stop.

The police car entered the intersection on a red light, with emergency lights and siren activated, and hit a southbound vehicle, according to investigators with the OPP Highway Safety Division’s Traffic Support Unit. It was then pushed into an eastbound vehicle, and four people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Const. Jordan Wittig, an officer with the OPP’s Port Credit detachment, was charged Monday with failing to stop for a red light and “emergency vehicle proceed without caution”.
