Police watchdog investigating fatal police shooting in Brockville, Ont.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit says a police officer shot and fatally injured a 28-year-old man in Brockville on Thursday evening.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said one of their tactics and rescue units was helping Brockville police carry out a search warrant at a home near King Street West and Broad Street around 8 p.m.

The SIU said Friday afternoon officers "encountered" the man, there was an "interaction" and one OPP officer shot him with an unspecified firearm.

That man was later pronounced dead in a hospital, the unit said. He has not been publicly identified.

The SIU investigates whether police broke any laws when they're possibly involved in a death or certain other types of serious incidents.

Its investigations typically see little information shared at the beginning of their work, with more information than would usually come from law enforcement shared in a detailed report months later.

In that report, the SIU can recommend for or against criminal charges.

A post-mortem examination of the man is scheduled for Saturday morning in Kingston, the SIU said.

BROCKVILLE - Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating the death of a 28-year-old man fatally shot by police south of Ottawa.

The Special Investigations Unit says Ontario Provincial Police went to a home in Brockville, Ont. around 8 p.m. Thursday to carry out a search.

The SIU says police encountered a man when they walked in, and one officer fired a shot, hitting the man.

It says the man was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The watchdog agency says it has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the case, with an autopsy scheduled for Saturday.

OPP have said they were helping local police carry out a search.

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a person was fatally shot during a police operation in Brockville Thursday night.

The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate following an incident involving members of the Ontario Provincial Police and Brockville Police Service on Aug. 6.

According to the OPP, officers with the East Region Tactics and Rescue Unit were assisting Brockville police with the execution of a search warrant at a residence in the city.

The operation was underway at approximately 8 p.m. when an interaction occurred and police discharged a firearm.

One person was taken to hospital following the shooting, where they were later pronounced dead.

Police have not released the identity of the deceased or provided additional information about what led to the shooting.

The OPP notified the Special Investigations Unit following the incident, and the provincial agency has now taken over the investigation.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault allegations or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

Because the SIU has invoked its mandate, the OPP says it cannot provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Additional information is expected to come from the SIU as its investigation into the fatal Brockville shooting continues.

Ontario’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate after a police officer shot and killed a man in Brockville, Ont. on Thursday.

According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), OPP officers were called to a home near King Street West and Broad Street at around 7:45 p.m. to execute a warrant. Officers encountered a 28-year-old man at the home.

“There was an interaction, and one officer discharged his firearm. The man was struck,” the SIU said. “The man was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”

The man has not been identified.

According to the OPP, officers with the East Region Tactics and Rescue Unit were assisting the Brockville Police Service in the execution of a search warrant at the home. Brockville police had advised residents via social media to avoid the King Street West and Broad Street area Thursday night.

The OPP notified the SIU, which invoked its mandate.

No other details were provided.

The SIU says four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. A post-mortem is scheduled for Saturday morning in Kingston.

A 28-year-old man died after being hit by police gunfire during a search at a downtown Brockville residence on Thursday night.

The fatality has led to an investigation by the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), a civilian law enforcement agency that investigates police in the event of a death, a serious injury, the discharge or a firearm at a person or a sexual assault during interactions with officers.

In a statement Friday, SIU officials said preliminary information indicates that, at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers went to a residence in the area of King Street West and Broad Street to carry out a search warrant.
OPP said its East Region Tactics and Rescue Unit was helping the Brockville Police Service carry out a search warrant at the residence.

SIU officials noted that, “upon entering the residence, officers encountered the man … There was an interaction, and one officer discharged his firearm. The man was struck.”

The man was then taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead, SIU officials added.

The OPP then notified the SIU, which invoked its mandate.

The SIU officials did not yet know how many officers are being investigated as a result of the fatality, and whether the investigation involves OPP or Brockville Police Service members.

Under the province’s Special Investigations Unit Act, after the SIU’s civilian investigators do their work, the agency’s director must consider whether the officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident and, depending on the evidence, either cause a criminal charge to be laid, or close the file without any charges being laid.

The SIU is required to report publicly on the results of its investigations.
