SIU clear officers after woman breaks her ankle

Investigations conducted by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit into serious incidents involving OPP officers, from injuries and deaths to allegations of sexual assault. Many argue that the SIU’s findings often serve to obscure, rather than reveal, police misconduct.

SIU clear officers after woman breaks her ankle

Post by Michael Jack »

KENORA — Officers have been cleared by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) after a woman broke her ankle while at the OPP detachment.

On May 31, 2025, provincial police responded to a call on First Street South and Matheson Street South regarding a woman in distress who needed assistance.

When an officer arrived, he offered assistance to the woman, but she refused it. A female special constable arrived to help get the woman into the back of the first officer's cruiser.

The woman was going to be kept overnight at the detachment until she was sober. When police arrived back at the detachment, the officers noticed the woman was favouring her right leg.

After assisting the woman into the sally port, the officers reported hearing a popping sound when the woman stood up.

She was brought to the hospital and was diagnosed with a fractured right ankle.

The SIU has determined that there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the woman’s arrest and injury.
