The constable, with seven years service, allegedly 'discharged a firearm during a training exercise, where firearm use was neither required nor authorized'

An OPP officer from Gravenhurst is facing Criminal Code charges following an on-duty incident.

Harinder Thakur, 34, a Provincial Constable with the Ontario Provincial Police with seven years of service, was charged with careless use of a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm, says a media release from the OPP.

On May 7, 2026, Thakur "discharged a firearm during a training exercise, where firearm use was neither required nor authorized," notes the media release.

Following the incident, the OPP's Professional Standards Unit launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and laid charges on Monday.

Thakur will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia on Oct. 13, 2026.

Thakur is a member of the OPP's Emergency Response Team and has been suspended from duty with pay in accordance with the Community Safety and Policing Act.

An Ontario Provincial Police officer has been charged with two firearm-related offences after allegedly discharging a firearm during a training exercise earlier this year.

Police say the officer was on duty and participating in training when the incident occurred on May 7.

According to the OPP Professional Standards Unit, the use of a firearm was neither required nor authorized during the exercise.

On Aug. 10, a 34-year-old provincial constable from Gravenhurst was arrested and charged with careless use of a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm.

The officer has served with the OPP for seven years and is a member of the Emergency Response Team, police said.

He has been suspended with pay in accordance with Ontario’s Community Safety and Policing Act and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 13.

The allegations against him have not been tested in court.

On Thursday, May 7, 2026, an OPP officer discharged a firearm during a training exercise, where firearm use was neither required nor authorized. The OPP PSU launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

On Monday, August 10, 2026, Harinder THAKUR, 34 years old, of Gravenhurst, who is a Provincial Constable with seven years of service, was arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

- Careless use of a firearm, section 86 (1)
- Reckless discharge of a firearm, section 244.2(1)(a)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

Provincial Constable THAKUR is a member of the OPP Emergency Response Team and is currently suspended from duty with pay in accordance with the Community Safety and Policing Act.
