Two people, including a police officer, seriously injured

Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a serious crash between a vehicle and police cruiser north of London Sunday afternoon.

Emergency crews arrived to the intersection of Nairn Road and Centre Road in North Middlesex around 3:30 p.m., where they responded to the crash which involved an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) vehicle, according to police.

An OPP officer and the driver of the passenger vehicle were both taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Ontario's Special Investiations Unit (SIU) invoked its mandate and has begun investigating. The SIU investigates cases involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.

OPP closed the intersection of Nairn and Centre roads for several hours Sunday.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating a serious crash involving an OPP cruiser in North Middlesex.

The collision happened around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 23rd, at the intersection of Nairn Road and Centre Road. Police say the crash involved an OPP cruiser and a passenger vehicle.

Emergency crews, including Middlesex County OPP, Middlesex-London Paramedic Service and North Middlesex Fire Services, responded to the scene.

The driver of the passenger vehicle and an OPP officer were both taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The intersection is expected to remain closed for several hours while investigators examine the scene.

Because the SIU has taken over the investigation, the OPP says it will not be releasing any further information at this time.

An Ontario Provincial Police officer and the driver of another vehicle were taken to hospital with “serious injuries” following a Sunday afternoon crash involving a cruiser northwest of London, police say.

Police say that it was about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday when Middlesex County OPP officers, paramedics and firefighters from North Middlesex were called to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Nairn Road and Centre Road. Nairn runs east-west and Centre runs north-south through a rural area directly north of Strathroy.

The OPP say the crash involved a passenger vehicle and an OPP cruiser. Police described the crash as “serious.” The police officer and the driver of the other vehicle were both taken to hospital, the OPP say.

As of about 8 p.m. on Sunday, police said that the intersection was expected to remain closed for several more hours “while emergency personnel and investigators remain on scene.”

Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), has launched a probe into the crash, police said. The SIU investigates cases involving serious injury, gunfire, death and allegations of sexual assault involving police across the province.

Due to the SIU involvement, the OPP say they won’t be able to make public any more information relating to the crash and directed media inquiries to the watchdog agency.
