SIU investigating after police pursuit ends in Wellington County crash

Five people were taken to hospital after a vehicle that police attempted to stop later crashed in Guelph-Eramosa Township.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate and is investigating the single-vehicle collision.

The incident began shortly after midnight Sunday, when Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attempted to stop a vehicle.

“The vehicle failed to stop, and police disengaged,” OPP said in a media release. “All five occupants were transported to hospital for assessment, and three were confirmed to have sustained injuries.”

The OPP notified the SIU.

As a result, police said they will not be providing further information about the incident.

SIU invokes mandate following collision in Wellington County

The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate following a collision in Wellington County.

On Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026, shortly after 12 a.m., members of the Wellington County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attempted to stop a vehicle in Guelph/Eramosa Township. The vehicle failed to stop, and police disengaged.

The vehicle was later located after a single-vehicle collision. All five occupants were transported to hospital for assessment, and three were confirmed to have sustained injuries.

The OPP notified the SIU, which invoked its mandate. As a result, the OPP will not be able to provide further information. Any media inquiries related to the SIU investigation should be directed to SIU Communications at siu.media@ontario.ca.

SIU called in after crash outside of Guelph, three injured

The province’s police watchdog has been brought in following a crash just outside of Guelph.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) tried to stop a vehicle in Guelph/Eramosa Township.

The driver reportedly kept going, and police said officers did not continue to try and pull them over.

That same vehicle was found crashed a short time later, with five people inside. No other vehicles were involved.

All five were taken to hospital to be checked out, with three confirmed to have been injured.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has taken over the investigation.
