Const. Damien Morin is accused of sexually assaulting two individuals and exposing himself in a restaurant on Valentine's Day

A member of the local Ontario Provincial Police detachment is facing criminal charges in connection with sexual misconduct allegations.

Court documents reveal that OPP Const. Damien Morin is accused of sexual assault, sexual assault causing bodily harm and indecent exposure in relation to incidents alleged to have taken place in February.

Two individuals are listed in court documents as alleged victims of sexual assault — with Morin accused of choking, strangling or suffocating a victim in one of those incidents.

It’s also alleged the officer exposed himself at a restaurant.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Morin is considered innocent until proven guilty.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested and charged Morin with sexual assault and indecent exposure on Valentine's Day — the same day the incidents allegedly took place.

He would be arrested again by the Sault police on April 14 and charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm, court records show.

A pair of publication bans prohibit SooToday and other media outlets from reporting on evidence and submissions given in court, as well as information that could identify victims and witnesses in cases involving sexual offences.

Morin was released on an undertaking in mid-February with a number of conditions, including orders not to communicate with three individuals and to stay away from two local businesses.

The 48-year-old man was released on bail last week in relation to the most recent criminal charge.

Morin’s next court date is scheduled for May 11.

In 2023, Morin was awarded the Police Exemplary Service Medal by the Governor General of Canada.

More recently, he made the Ontario Sunshine List for earning $129,230 last year.

OPP officer has been on an 'unrelated leave of absence,' but the OPP won't say if the veteran constable remains on the payroll

An Ontario Provincial Police constable facing sexual misconduct charges is currently on leave — but police won’t disclose if the officer is still getting paid.

That information comes days after it was revealed that Sault Ste. Marie OPP Const. Damien Morin is accused of sexually assaulting two victims and exposing himself at a restaurant.

The allegations have not been tested in court and Morin is considered innocent until proven guilty.

OPP spokesperson Martin Thibault confirmed that Morin has been on an “unrelated leave of absence,” and remains on leave from the local OPP detachment.

“As the matter was investigated by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and is before the courts, it would be inappropriate for the OPP to provide further comment to protect the integrity of the investigation and court proceedings,” he said in an email on Friday.

The OPP isn’t saying if the 23-year veteran is being paid while on leave.

“I don’t have that information, as this falls under HR-related matters that are not typically shared with us,” Thibault said, when asked for clarification.
