Ontario's police watchdog is investigating a collision in Simcoe, Ont., on Wednesday that left a 77-year-old woman in serious condition and an Ontario Provincial Police officer injured.

The collision happened around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Norfolk Street North and Riverside Road, provincial police and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said.

According to the SIU, the officer was on their way to a call and was travelling south on Norfolk Street when they collided with a Honda CRV at the intersection.

The driver of the SUV, a 77-year-old woman, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, according to the SIU. She was transported to a local hospital but was later airlifted to the trauma centre at Hamilton General Hospital.

The officer sustained minor injuries, police said.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is appealing for anyone who may have witnessed, or has photos or video of a collision in Simcoe on Wednesday involving a Norfolk OPP cruiser and a sport utility vehicle (SUV).

Norfolk County OPP, paramedics and fire services were dispatched at about 1:36 p.m. to Norfolk Street North and Riverside Road in Simcoe. The collision occurred as a police vehicle was travelling south on Norfolk Street North, en route to a call, when it collided with a Honda CRV.

A 77-year-old woman from the SUV was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries, and was subsequently airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital. The police officer sustained minor injuries.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to examine the circumstances that led to the collision.

As a civilian law enforcement agency, the province’s SIU has jurisdiction over municipal, regional and provincial police services, and investigates the conduct of officers that results in the serious injury or death of a person, discharging a firearm, or sexual assault of a person as reported by the individual.

The collision happened around 1:30 p.m. on April 15 at the intersection of Norfolk Street North and Riverside Road, provincial police and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said.

According to the SIU, the officer was on their way to a call and was travelling south on Norfolk Street when they collided with a Honda CRV at the intersection.

In a release on Wednesday, the SIU said through its investigation it appears that three vehicles were in the area and the drivers of those vehicles may have witnessed the collision.
