NEEBING – An OPP officer has been charged with careless driving causing death in relation to a collision on Highway 61 last fall.

On Nov. 24, 2025, Thunder Bay OPP officers and EMS responded to a collision between a motor vehicle and a motorcycle along the highway at Hanna Road in the Municipality of Neebing.

Poul-Erik Binderup, 58, of Oliver Paipoonge, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Binderup was the driver of the motorcycle.

Pierre Nicholas Rhone, 45, of Neebing, has been charged with careless driving causing death.

Rhone, an OPP constable, was off duty at the time of the collision.

He’s scheduled to appear in court on May 4.

The allegations against the accused have not been proven in court.

An off-duty Ontario Provincial Police officer in northwestern Ontario has been charged with careless driving causing death following a fatal collision in November.

The crash happened on Highway 61 at Hanna Road in Neebing. Police say the officer was operating a personal vehicle at the time and was not on duty.

The collision involved a motorcycle, and the rider, 58-year-old Poul-Erik Binderup of Oliver Paipoonge, was killed.

The officer is scheduled to appear in court in Thunder Bay on May 4.
