They say the crash involved an OPP cruiser and an SUV.

An OPP officer and a crisis worker in the police cruiser were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as was the driver of the SUV.

Police say they are investigating the crash.

The province's Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate, as it is required to do in incidents with police that result in serious injuries, death, allegations of sexual assault or an officer discharging their firearm at a person.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating following a collision between an OPP cruiser and SUV on Friday.

According to a news release, at approximately 4:20 p.m. on Friday, police, along with fire crews and EMS responded to a collision involving an SUV and an OPP cruiser at the intersection of Petrolia Line and Kimball Road in St. Clair Township.

The two members of the Lambton County OPP Mobile Crisis Response Team, consisting of an officer and a crisis worker, who were inside the police vehicle, as well as the driver of the SUV, were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Petrolia Line was closed from Tecumseh Road to Waubuno Road and Kimball Road was closed from Rokeby Line to LaSalle Line so police could investigate.

As a result of the collision, the SIU has invoked its mandate.

The SIU is an independent authority responsible for investigating the conduct of officials, such as police, that resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a weapon at another person.

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after three people were hurt when an OPP cruiser and SUV collided in St. Clair Township, provincial police say.

The crash, at Petrolia Line and Kimball Road about 4:20 p.m. Friday, sent a Lambton OPP Mobile Crisis Response Team police officer and crisis worker and the SUV driver to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The intersection, which has been the focus of local officials’ attention due to previous crashes, was closed for more than 12 hours for the investigation, OPP said on social media.

In a release, OPP said they wouldn’t say more about the crash because Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) had invoked its mandate,

The SIU is an arm’s-length civilian agency that probes all cases of serious injury, death, police-involved shootings and allegations of sexual assault involving police officers.

Lambton County is to begin engineering work this year to add a traffic roundabout at the intersection, with construction expected in 2027.

“I’m very glad of that,” Jeff Agar, mayor of St. Clair Township, said at county council’s recent 2026 budget meeting.

The intersection has been the site of several crashes, including two fatal collisions in 2020, spurring calls for safety upgrades.

“It was brought to my attention the intersection is No. 2 for fatalities in all of Lambton County,” Agar told the budget session, where politicians backed a call for staff to look at modifying stop signs at the crossroads until the roundabout is built.

Options may include adding a flashing light to the signs, said Jason Cole, the county’s infrastructure and development general manager.

“Whatever you could come up with, I would appreciate it,” Agar said.

The intersection was reviewed in 2021 with the help of a consultant, and, at the time, traffic didn’t meet provincial guidelines for traffic signals, the county has said.
