Wellington OPP officer accused of sexual assault in Guelph

A Wellington OPP officer is under investigation for alleged sexual assault while on duty.
Announced Friday, the province’s Special Investigations Unit – the watchdog agency that considers laying criminal charges against police in certain circumstances, including sexual assault allegations – is looking into the complaint.
An SIU spokesperson said the alleged incident is reported to have happened on Wednesday in Guelph. The SIU learned of the allegations through OPP west region officials.
“I cannot release further details at this time,” the spokesperson said via email. “The release of information related to investigations of sexual assault allegations is associated with a risk of further deterring what is already an under-reported crime and undermining the heightened privacy interests of the involved parties, most emphatically, the complainants.”
The SIU's mandate is to conduct independent investigations into alleged incidents involving police when a civilian has died, suffered a serious injury, or been subjected to sexual assault.
