Ontario Provincial Police Block

The Essex County Ontario Provincial Police are now equipped with ‘Body Worn Cameras’.

After a successful roll out of the ‘In Car Cameras’ (ICC), which incorporated an ‘Automated Licence Plate Recognition’ (ALPR) system, the Essex County OPP, along with other detachments within West Region, are rolling out cameras for each individual officer.

The cameras are worn on the front of the officer’s vest and are clearly visible to anyone an officer may be interacting with. The camera will display a visible green ring with flashing lights when in standby mode, which will turn flashing red once the cameras begin recording.

The full deployment in Essex County is expected to be complete as soon as practicable, though officers who have finished training will begin using them immediately.

The tools are meant to improve evidence collection and enhance accountability and transparency.

The OPP says cameras will be worn on the front of the officer's vest and will be clearly visible to anyone interacting with the officer. A red light will flash on the front of the camera when it is recording.

Officers who have finished training will begin wearing the cameras immediately. Full deployment will follow as training continues.
