One person is dead and the province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating following a Tuesday afternoon police shooting in Turkey Point.

Members of the Norfolk County Marine Unit of the Ontario Provincial Police attempted to stop a boater who had entered a marina and fled on foot, said a media release. The encounter happened at about 2 p.m.

The individual was subsequently found by the OPP Emergency Response Team and the Canine Unit. During the interaction, police discharged their firearm, Norfolk OPP said in a Tuesday evening statement.

The individual was pronounced deceased, Norfolk OPP said.

The SIU has invoked its mandate and the OPP will not be providing any further information about the incident, said West Region OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk.

The SIU in Ontario invokes its mandate when there is a death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person involving a police officer or other designated official.

Meanwhile, Brad Thomson, posted a video on the MacDonald Turkey Point Marina Boaters, social media page saying that everyone at the marina was safe. He posted the video at 10:20 p.m.

Thomson said C-row dockage at the marina had re-opened but said boaters will need to be able to provide their dock number to get in and out. There will be a police presence and no one else will be allowed in or out.

Police will be at the scene overnight, Thomson said.

“This incident was a gentleman on a Sea Doo who came speeding into the channel and came ashore and fled on foot up the shore,” Thomson said. “So the incident did not happen in any way in the marina,

“He simply brought a Sea Doo in too fast, so no boats were damaged, nobody was injured, no employees were injured.”

Thomson said the marina is open and he thanked people for their support.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is investigating a fatal shooting involving the police.

In a social media post at 7:14 p.m. Tuesday the SIU said they were investigating a shooting in the area of MacDonald Turkey Point Marina in Norfolk County.

OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk posted a video regarding the incident on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

He said members of the OPP Marine unit attempted to stop a boater who had entered the marina before running off.

The canine unit was called in to find the person.

“During the interaction, police discharged a firearm,” Sgt. Sanchuk said. “The individual was pronounced deceased.”

The SIU is called in to investigate all incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury, discharge of a firearm at a person or allegations of sexual assault.

A boater has died after an Ontario Provincial Police-involved shooting in Turkey Point Tuesday afternoon, the police force said.

The person was pronounced dead. No further details about the person who died have been released.

The Special Investigations Unit confirmed they have been called in to investigate and further details about the incident are expected to be released later.

The SIU is an independent civilian agency that probes incidents where people died or were seriously injured. Investigators also review incidents where sexual assault has been alleged, or a firearm was discharged at a person.

He was struck by both a bullet and an anti-riot weapon, says SIU

The province's police watchdog is investigating after a man was shot and killed by Ontario Provincial Police in Turkey Point on Tuesday afternoon.

Norfolk County OPP said the incident began around 1 p.m., when members of the Norfolk County Marine Unit attempted to stop a boater.

According to the initial report by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), OPP officers spotted a personal watercraft that caught their attention and when they tried to get the operator to stop, he headed into the Turkey Point Marina and ran into some bushes.

The SIU said officers set up a perimeter and then there was an interaction between the man and police, when one officer discharged an Anti-Riot Weapon ENField, and another officer discharged his firearm.

"The 22-year-old man appears to have been struck by both firearms. He was pronounced deceased at the scene," read the report.

The identity of the man has not been released.

The SIU, which probes incidents involving police where there has been serious injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault, has assigned four investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.

A 22-year-old man died after being struck by a firearm during an encounter with OPP officers in Turkey Point on Tuesday, the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a statement.

The SIU said the victim was also struck by an Anti-Riot Weapon ENFIELD (ARWEN) during the incident. An ARWEN can fire plastic bullets, tear gas and other projectiles and is seen as a less lethal weapon used by law enforcement.

The incident began at about 1 p.m. when OPP officers on the water near the Turkey Point Marina spotted a personal watercraft that got their attention, Monica Hudon, of the SIU communications department, said in the statement.

Officers attempted to get the operator to stop.

However, the man headed to the marina, left the personal watercraft and ran into some bushes near the marina, Hudon said.

Police set up a perimeter and there was an interaction between the police and the man.

“One officer discharged an Anti-Riot Weapon ENFIELD, and another officer discharged his firearm,” Hudon said. “The 22-year-old man appears to have been struck by both firearms.

“He was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Hudon said four investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate the incident.
