SIU clears Brantford officer after man injured in April foot pursuit

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has found no basis to proceed with charges against a Brantford police officer after a foot chase in April ended in a serious fall.

On April 26, the officer was on patrol when he saw two men in a physical altercation in the area of King and Dalhousie streets.

When one of them fled, the officer pursued the 22-year-old man on foot with another officer.

As the officers approached, the 22-year-old attempted to climb from a half-wall onto a walkway.

He lost his footing due to wet and slippery conditions and hung from the outer railing.

One of the officers managed to grab his hand before he slipped and fell to the ground below.

The 22-year-old suffered trauma to the head, a liver laceration and multiple fractures.

The SIU has determined the officer did not commit a criminal offence in connection with the man’s fall and injuries.
