A 15-month-old boy was hit and seriously injured Friday by an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer moving a car on a driveway in Oxford Station, Ont., according to Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which investigates cases where police injure civilians.
The OPP issued a statement about the noon-hour incident on Saturday morning, writing that SIU was looking into what happened.
The on-duty officer was moving a personal vehicle in their own driveway, according to the OPP.
The boy is now in stable condition and remains in hospital, according to the SIU, which would not comment to Radio-Canada but issued its own news release Saturday afternoon.
"Our thoughts are with the child's family and everyone impacted by this tragic incident," wrote OPP in its statement.
Oxford Station is about 50 kilometres south of downtown Ottawa.

15-month-old hit by vehicle operated by on-duty officer, SIU investigating
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a 15-month-old was struck by a car driven by an officer in a private driveway at a home in Oxford Station Friday, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
The officer was on-duty when the incident happened, the OPP told CTV News Ottawa.
It happened shortly after noon when the OPP officer “was moving a personal vehicle in their driveway,” the OPP in Grenville County said in a news release.
The child sustained “serious injuries” and was taken to a regional trauma centre, police say.
The child remains in hospital in stable condition, said the SIU in a news release.
Police will not provide further details about the incident, as the investigation is in the hands of the province’s watchdog agency, the OPP said.
“Four investigators, one forensic investigator and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case,” reads the SIU’s release.
“Four witness officials and one subject official have been designated.”
Anyone with information about this incident or video footage is asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
The SIU investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or discharge of a firearm at a person.
Oxford Mills is around 70 kilometres south of Ottawa.

SIU probes after child struck by car driven by on-duty officer
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate to investigate after an infant was struck Friday by a car driven by an on-duty police officer.
In a release issued Saturday, Ontario Provincial police in Grenville County said the incident occurred at about noon on May 9, when the unnamed officer was moving a personal vehicle in a driveway at a home in the Oxford Mills area.
The SIU noted “preliminary information” confirmed the officer had been at a private property Friday afternoon.
“In the driveway of the residence, the personal vehicle being operated by the officer struck a 15-month-old boy,” the memo said.
The child was taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries and remained in hospital Saturday, listed in stable condition.
The agency said four investigators, one forensic investigator and one collision reconstructionist had been assigned to the case.
The SIU asked that anyone with information, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
The area is about 70 kilometres south of Ottawa.
Because the SIU has taken over the case, the OPP would not provide further details on the incident.
The SIU is a civilian agency responsible for investigating circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in a death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
