OPP officer charged after man seriously injured in Georgian Bay

Const. Scott Anthony facing charges of assault causing bodily harm, assault with weapon

A Bracebridge Ontario Provincial Police officer is facing assault charges after a man was hurt in an encounter with police in July, the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says.

The charges stem from an incident that happened in the Township of Georgian Bay, Ont. on July 10, according to a news release issued Thursday.

That's when Bracebridge OPP officers were called to a Canadian Pacific Railway yard for a reported break-in.

Police found a man they believed to be involved near a "retail area" on Front Street, the SIU says. There was then "an interaction" between an officer and the man, before he was arrested.

The 43-year-old man was taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with serious injuries, the news release says. The SIU, which investigates incidents involving police that result in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a gun at a person, did not say how exactly the man was hurt, nor provide specifics of his injuries.

The SIU says Const. Scott Anthony has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon.

"As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation," the police watchdog statement reads.

Anthony is scheduled to appear in court in Bracebridge in December.

OPP officer faces assault charges after 43-year-old man seriously injured

BRACEBRIDGE, Ont. - An Ontario Provincial Police officer is facing a pair of assault charges, the province’s police watchdog said Thursday, following the arrest of a man who was allegedly left with serious injuries.

The Special Investigations Unit said the OPP constable has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon in the arrest of the 43-year-old man.

The SIU said Bracebridge OPP officers were called to a Canadian Pacific Railway yard in Georgian Bay around 3:20 a.m. on July 10 after a reported trespassing and break and enter.

In a previous news release, the agency had said officers tracked a suspect to a nearby retail area where they shot him with a stun gun and arrested him.

The SIU said the man was sent to hospital where he was diagnosed with serious injuries.

The watchdog is called in to investigate when police conduct may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm.

The OPP constable who has been charged is set to appear in a Bracebridge court on Dec. 20.

The OPP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bracebridge OPP officer facing assault charges after SIU investigation

The Special Investigations Unit said a Bracebridge Ontario Provincial Police officer is facing assault charges in connection with an arrest earlier this year.

In a statement Thursday, the director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, said he found reasonable grounds to believe that an OPP officer committed criminal offences in connection with the arrest of a 43-year-old man in the Township of Georgian Bay.

On July 10, officers were called to the Canadian Pacific Railway yard for a reported trespass, breaking and entering investigation.

Officers located the man believed to be involved near a retail area on Front Street.

The SIU said there was an interaction between the officer and the man, which resulted in the man being transported to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with serious injuries following his arrest.

As a result of the SIU investigation, Const. Scott Anthony is charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of assault with a weapon.

Anthony is required to appear before the Ontario court of justice at 3 Dominion St. in Bracebridge on Dec. 20.

As the matter is before the courts, the SIU has said it will not provide further comment on the investigation.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

The watchdog is called in to investigate when police conduct may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm.

An OPP spokesperson said the officer charged has been with the force for 24 years and is on an unrelated leave of absence.

“Any potential investigation under the Police Services Act would only take place after the criminal charge is dealt with,” Gosia Puzio wrote in a statement.

The charged OPP constable is set to appear in a Bracebridge court on Dec. 20.
