The Ontario Provincial Police said one of its own has been arrested and charged with sexual assault in relation to a "domestic incident."

The OPP's professional standards bureau began investigating a male officer in October of last year after receiving a complaint involving events while the officer was not on duty, the force said in a news release Tuesday.

He now faces three counts of sexual assault as well as three counts of "overcome resistance by choking."

The 30-year-old officer, who has been with OPP's East Region detachment for four years, has been suspended with pay.

He has been released from custody and is expected to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date.

OPP said the identity of the officer would not be released to protect the identity of the victim.

Officers in the professional standards bureau received a complaint about the conduct of an officer in October.

An Ontario Provincial Police officer has been charged with multiple counts of sexual assault and choking.

Officers in the OPP’s professional standards bureau, which investigates allegations of police misconduct, received a complaint about the conduct of an officer in October.

The male officer, 30, has been charged with three counts each of sexual assault and overcoming resistance by choking “in relation to a domestic incident.” All of the charges relate to off-duty conduct, police said.

The man has been an officer in the OPP’s east region for four years. He was released on an undertaking to appear in court later and has been suspended from the provincial force with pay.

Police withheld the officer’s name, saying that in so doing they were protecting the identity of the alleged victim.

The investigation continues.

Postby Thomas » Thu Feb 13, 2020 3:39 am

An Ontario Provincial Police officer has been charged with sexual assault and choking in connection with a domestic incident.

The OPP reported Tuesday its Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) “has arrested and charged an off-duty OPP member in relation to a domestic incident.”

The OPP said the 30-year-old male accused “has been a member of the OPP (East Region) for four years.”

OPP East Region spokesman Bill Dickson said police were not identifying the accused in order to protect the identity of the victim, and that included any details about the detachment where the officer works. But he did say the accused is scheduled to appear in Brockville court on March 13.

OPP PSB officers started an investigation in October 2019 after receiving a complaint, police reported.

As a result of that investigation, the accused has been charged with three counts of sexual assault and three counts of overcoming resistance by choking, said police.

The accused was released on an undertaking. He has been suspended with pay, in accordance with the Police Services Act of Ontario.

The PSB investigation was continuing.
