The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), conducted an investigation regarding allegations of misconduct against an on-duty police officer.

On Sept. 24, 2020, Staff Sergeant Roberto Manca, a 23-year member of the OPP currently serving as a Central Region Emergency Response Team, was arrested and charged with four counts of section 244.2(1)(b) discharging firearm - recklessness, and four counts of section 86(1) careless use of a firearm, contrary to the Criminal Code. He has been suspended with pay in accordance with the Police Services Act.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on Nov. 18, 2020.

The incidents were isolated to on-duty police training exercises at firearm ranges and did not involve the public.

OPP officer charged after firing range incident

Careless use of a firearm charges have been laid against an OPP officer after an incident at a police firing range.

Staff-Sgt. Roberto Manca, a member of the Central Region Emergency Response Team and a 23-year veteran of the Ontario Provincial Police, was arrested Thursday in connection with an on-duty training incident.

An OPP spokesperson declined comment on when the offences allegedly took place at an OPP firing range, or the circumstances behind them.

Manca faces four charges each of reckless discharge of a firearm and of careless use of a firearm.

He’s scheduled to appear in court in November, and remains suspended with pay, as per the Police Services Act.

Reckless firearm charges laid against Orillia OPP officer

BARRIE, ONT. -- The Orillia OPP is investigating one of its own after allegations of misconduct.

The 23-year veteran OPP officer was arrested and charged with four counts of reckless discharge of a firearm and four counts of careless use of a firearm.

The officer is a member of the Central Region Emergency Response Team and was suspended with pay following the arrest.

The OPP said the incidents were isolated to on-duty police training exercises at gun ranges and did not involve the public.

The officer was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in a Barrie court in November.
