Two Kenora OPP officers charged with assault, suspended with pay

KENORA, Ont. — Two police officers are facing assault charges after an investigation into the arrest of a suspect in Kenora, Ont., last year.

Ontario Provincial Police say officers responded to reports that a paramedic had been assaulted while responding to a call on Matheson Street in Kenora on Dec. 26.

They say a suspect was taken into custody and charged with assault and resisting arrest, but police later withdrew the resisting arrest charge.

The OPP Professional Standards Unit started an investigation in January into the circumstances of the arrest.

Police say two officers from the Kenora OPP have been charged with assault and have been suspended with pay.

The two accused officers are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on May 4.

Two Ontario Provincial Police officers from the Kenora detachment have been charged with assault stemming from an arrest that took place on Boxing Day last year.

Const. Karl Ranta, who has been an officer with the provincial police force for nearly four years, and Const. Alexander McEachern, a member for nearly two years, were charged on Wednesday, according to an OPP news release.

The provincial police service's professional standards unit started an investigation earlier this year into the Dec. 26 arrest, the news release said.

The two officers responded that day to a report a paramedic had been assaulted in an incident on Matheson Street in the northwestern Ontario city.

The assault on the paramedic, who was responding to a call, had ended by the time officers arrived, but a struggle ensued as Ranta and McEachern approached the alleged assailant to arrest them, the police service said.

The accused was taken into custody and charged with assault and resisting arrest, but the latter charge has since been dropped, according to the release.

The news release did not provide any further details on the assault allegations against Ranta and McEachern.

When an investigation into the arrest was started in January, one constable involved was suspended with pay, while the other was placed on modified duties.

Ranta and McEachern have now both suspended with pay, pending the outcome of the court process, the police service's news release said.

Both officers are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on May 4.

Kenora: Two OPP Officers Face Assault Charges

Postby Thomas » Sat Apr 08, 2023 8:17 am

KENORA – News – Two Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers from the Kenora Detachment have been charged with assault. The charges come after an incident on December 26, 2022, when officers responded to a reported disturbance on Matheson Street in Kenora.

It was reported that a paramedic, who was responding to a call, had been assaulted, although the assault had ended by the time officers arrived. As officers approached an individual to make an arrest, a struggle ensued. The accused person was taken into custody and charged with assault and resisting arrest, but the latter charge has since been withdrawn.

The OPP Professional Standards Unit (PSU) launched an investigation in January 2023 into the circumstances surrounding the arrest. At that time, one officer was suspended with pay, under the terms of the Ontario Police Services Act, and another officer was placed on modified duties.

Today, on April 5, 2023, the OPP PSU has charged Provincial Constables Karl RANTA and Alexander MCEACHERN with assault, under section 266 of the Criminal Code. RANTA has been an OPP member for 44 months, and MCEACHERN has been a member for 22 months. Both officers have been suspended with pay, under the terms of the Police Services Act, pending the outcome of the court process.

The accused officers are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on May 4, 2023. NetNewsLedger.com will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
