Police watchdog received complaint in May about assault between 1995 and 1998

Ontario's police watchdog has charged an Ontario Provincial Police officer with a sexual assault in the 1990s in the former Rideau Township, which is currently the southern edge of Ottawa.

A Special Investigations Unit (SIU) news release said information was received in May about a sexual assault that happened between 1995 and 1998.

The SIU has now charged Donald Hickey with one count of sexual assault. They originally said he was retired, then corrected their news release a few hours later to say he is an active member of the force.

He is expected in court on Oct. 27 so no further details would be released, the watchdog said.

The SIU investigates any incidents of serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or death involving police officers in Ontario.

OPP officer charged with sexual assault, SIU says

Postby Thomas » Sun Oct 10, 2021 5:10 pm

Donald Hickey is scheduled to appear in court in Ottawa on Oct. 27.

The province’s civilian police watchdog has charged an Ontario Provincial Police officer with one count of sexual assault after investigating a complaint dating back to the 1990s.

Donald Hickey is scheduled to appear in court in Ottawa on Oct. 27, the Special Investigations Unit said in a release Friday.

On May 18, the SIU received a complaint of sexual assault that had allegedly occurred between 1995 and 1998 in the former Rideau Township, which is now part of the City of Ottawa.

“As the matter is before the courts, and, in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation,” the unit said.

The SIU’s civilian investigators probe the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
