Huron County councillor looks for alternatives in handling soaring OPP costs

(Huron County) - Rural municipalities across Ontario are seeing the cost of OPP service rise every year, and a member of Huron County Council wants to see if there's a solution.

Councillor Ben Van Diepenbeek says all of Huron's rural municipalities have seen an increase in their policing costs.

He wonders if a solution might be found in a future County-wide contract.

Van Diepenbeek tells Bayshore Broadcasting News that the province is using a "one size fits all" solution that doesn't work.

He says that's because different municipalities have different needs that call for levels of policing unique to their areas.

Van Diepenbeek says the new OPP funding model is unfair because it hurts smaller municipalities, who get little increase in the level of service.

He says in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh, the OPP cost will increase by around $100,000 each year for the next five years.

Van Diepenbeek was looking to spark a broader discussion of the issue during County Council's strategic planning meetings in Benmiller last Thursday and Friday.
