The Ontario Special Investigations Unit, a police watchdog, has found no grounds to charge Quinte West OPP officers after a 60-year-old man suffered a fractured wrist while in custody.

On August 5, the man was arrested for impaired driving after a collision in Trenton. While at the detachment, he prevented an officer from closing the cell door. The officer put his hand on the man’s chest to move him away, when the man slipped on the wet floor and fell backwards, fracturing his wrist.

The next morning the man attempted to harm himself, prompting officers to intervene. A struggle ensued where one officer struck him with his hands and knees, and another officer tazed the man, before they handcuffed him.

After investigating, the SIU has determined that all officers involved acted lawfully and there is no basis to press charges.
