SIU investigating after man dies in Quinte West police cell Thursday

Man, 36, was arrested earlier Thursday morning

Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a man died in a cell at the Ontario Provincial Police detachment in Quinte West, Ont., shortly after being arrested on Thursday morning.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the 36-year-old man was arrested around 9:30 a.m. Thursday around Front Street and Dundas Street West.

OPP officers took him to the police station and he was placed in a cell.

Around 10:30 a.m. the man was found to be unresponsive, the release said. Emergency services were called and police started giving first aid, including administering the anti-opioid overdose drug, Naloxone.

When emergency services arrived, they took over from police, and at 11:14 a.m. the man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the SIU.

The SIU said three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. The unit automatically investigates police any time officers are involved in a death, serious injury, sexual assault or the firing of a weapon at a person.
