SIU clears OPP officer of 'criminal offence' in Carleton Place crash that severely injured woman, 70

The crash occurred Aug. 16, when a patrol car slowly entered an intersection at 9th Line and was struck by another vehicle travelling westbound.

The province’s police watchdog has found no reasonable grounds that an Ontario Provincial Police officer committed a criminal offence in connection with serious injuries to a 70-year-old woman after a vehicle she was in struck a police cruiser last August in Beckwith Township.

The crash occurred Aug. 16, when the officer stopped at a stop sign while travelling north on Derry Side Road. The SIU report indicated the patrol car slowly entered the intersection at 9th Line, where the cruiser was struck by another vehicle driven by a male travelling westbound on 9th Line.

The woman, a passenger in the civilian vehicle, was diagnosed with serious injuries, including a torn aorta.

Though the officer was responsible for the collision, SIU Director Joseph Martino wrote that he was satisfied “there were no reasonable grounds to believe that the officer transgressed the limits of care prescribed by the criminal law.”

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers and other peace officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

All investigations are conducted by civilian SIU investigators who are civilians.
