SIU probing fatal police-involved incident in northeastern Ontario

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has launched an investigation into a police-involved incident in Latchford on Thursday that resulted in the death of one individual and the arrest of another.

At approximately 5 p.m., officers from the Kirkland Lake detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police attempted to initiate a traffic stop in the area of Government Road West and Woods Street in Kirkland Lake.

The vehicle failed to stop, however, and the officers, along with others from the OPP’s Temiskaming Detachment, engaged in a suspect-apprehension pursuit.

As a result of the incident, a shelter-in-place order was issued in Latchford and the surrounding area as they searched for a suspect — believed to be armed and dangerous — described as male, Middle Eastern, approximately 30 years of age, dressed in black.

According to a press release on Friday, there are no ongoing concerns for public safety at this time.

The OPP has confirmed one person is dead, while another person has been taken into custody.

Highway 11 was closed for hours from Portage Bay Road to Highway 11B for investigation.

One man dead, bystander seriously injured in shooting involving OPP officers in northeastern Ontario: SIU

The Special Investigative Unit (SIU) is investigating an exchange of gunfire involving multiple Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers that left one man dead and an innocent bystander seriously injured in Timiskaming District in northeastern Ontario.

Around 5 p.m. on Thursday, OPP officers in Kirkland Lake stopped a vehicle with two male occupants inside after conducting a traffic stop, the SIU said in a news release. The officers attempted to arrest the two men for alleged "drug-related offences" before they fled the scene, the release added.

The SIU said the vehicle was fleeing the scene in the Highway 11 and Portage Bay Road area when police tried to stop the driver, leading to an "exchange of gunfire."

One of the men, 26 years old, in the vehicle was found dead, while the other — who was uninjured — fled on foot but was found shortly after and arrested by police, the release says.

The SIU added that during the shooting, a 76-year-old male bystander, a resident of the area, sustained serious but non life-threatening injuries and was sent to hospital where he remains.

"Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for Monday," the SIU said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact investigators at 1-800-787-8529.
