Still no SIU ruling in fatal shooting by Almaguin OPP in Burk’s Falls

Sheena Jackson was fatally shot by Almaguin OPP on Aug. 5, 2021 after police responded to a call of an unwanted person at Ye Old Cutter Camp in Burk’s Falls.

Almost a year later, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has yet to issue a ruling.

The only press release issued by the SIU on Aug. 6, 2021 states that Almaguin OPP responded to a Burk’s Falls residence and were confronted by a woman “wielding” a knife when “an interaction ensued and both officers discharged their pistols. The female was struck and mortally wounded.”

A third member of the OPP tried to perform CPR but resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. The victim’s mother was told Jackson was shot twice in the heart.

The SIU’s website indicates that the investigation is still ongoing and awaiting further documentation.

Almaguin News reached out to the SIU and asked what documentation was required and when to expect further updates.

Monica Hudon, communications co-ordinator for the SIU, replied saying there was no timeline on when they could expect the report.

“Firearms evidence was submitted to the Centre of Forensic Sciences for analysis, and the SIU is awaiting the report,” Hudon wrote May 19, 2022.

Almaguin OPP had no comment on the investigation and referred questions to the SIU.

Individuals close to Jackson said the call made by Jackson’s partner Devon Boston was related to mental health and that Jackson had recently buried her 20-year-old daughter.

The death of Jackson sparked a weeklong protest in front of the Almaguin Highlands OPP detachment and a GoFundMe that raised $3,760 for the family.
