2 OPP officers suspended, charged following 2011 ATV inciden

Postby Thomas » Thu Jun 15, 2017 12:38 am

Two veteran Ontario Provincial Police officers are facing criminal charges in connection with an incident dating back to April 2011.

Staff Sgt. Wayne Thompson of the Bruce Peninsula OPP and Acting Staff Sgt. Kevin Muir of the Grey County OPP face charges of Breach of Trust and Obstruction of Justice following an incident in Cape Croker First Nation Reserve, north of Owen Sound.

Both Thompson, a 29-year member of the force, and Muir, a 17-year member of the force, were off-duty at the time of the incident.

According to several news reports from that time, a 40-year-old man was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to a Toronto hospital after two ATVs collided in an area of the reserve which was not sanctioned as an ATV trail.

Muir was later charged with following too closely.

Police say new information which was provided to them prompted an investigation into potential wrongdoing in May 2017.

Both officers have been suspended with pay. They are scheduled to appear in court in Owen Sound in August.
