Man shot in altercation at Nipigon residence

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has begun an investigation into the fatal shooting of a Nipigon man by an OPP officer.

OPP were called to a residence on Park Road in Nipigon, Ont. — located about 120 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay — at about 7:30 pm on Saturday, Nov. 26.

An SIU release states responding officers encountered a man at the residence, and there was an interaction between him and responding officers.

One of the officers discharged his firearm and struck the man, who was then taken to Nipigon District Memorial Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

SIU spokeswoman Monica Hudon was unable to provide many more details due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

She did say the deceased male was 45 years old.

Hudon said SIU investigators started arriving in Nipigon overnight Saturday.

"Four investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate this incident," she said. "At this time, they have designated one subject officer and eight witness officers."

Hudon said witness officers are individuals who have knowledge of the situation, but weren't necessarily at the scene when it happened.

The SIU is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529, ext. 2314.
