OPP veteran arrested for allegedly obstructing justice

Postby Thomas » Sun Jun 19, 2016 8:18 am

An OPP veteran and the father of a man who pleaded guilty to sex crimes against children has been arrested for allegedly obstructing justice.

Const. Mark Lund – an officer with Southern Georgian Bay OPP – was arrested on Thursday, following an investigation by the OPP Professional Standards Bureau.

The 50-year-old is a 27-year veteran of the OPP.

Investigators didn’t provide details of the incident, but say it happened while he was off-duty.

“I can’t get into the specifics of it, however members of our professional standards branch was involved,” says OPP Sgt. Peter Leon. “They carried out a thorough and detailed investigation which accumulated today with the arrest of provincial Const. Lund.”

Lund is the father of Shayne Lund. Shayne was arrested in 2013 along with two other women. He has pleaded guilty to 35 charges, including sexual assault, making and possessing child pornography, and bestiality.

Police silence raises questions

Postby Thomas » Sun Jun 26, 2016 3:22 pm

MIDLAND – The response to media inquiries about charges laid against a Southern Georgian Bay OPP officer last week raises disturbing questions about police accountability and openness.

Const. Mark Lund, an OPP officer for 27 years, was charged with obstruction of justice June 16. The OPP issued a bare-bones press release – just 116 words in total – that was remarkable for its lack of detail.

Typically, such a document outlines the alleged actions that led to a charge being laid. For impaired driving, police will explain where and when the motorist was stopped, whether he or she exhibited signs of impairment, and the results of the breathalyzer test.

In the Lund case, however, police revealed no information that might have shed light on the case – well, except that the accused was off duty at the time, which seems a self-serving, exculpatory tidbit in light of how little else was divulged.

But outstanding questions remain. What precisely is Lund accused of doing? How was justice allegedly obstructed? Does it have something to do with the sexual-assault case involving Lund’s son Shayne?

The OPP would not even confirm that father-son relationship. In fact, they refused to provide an answer to any question posed, explaining they could not comment on a case currently before the courts.

Except they do so all the time. News releases from the police are never just a point-form list of name/date/time/place/charges. Relevant details about the allegations are always included.

What is different here? Well, one hesitates to say Lund is being shielded because he is a cop, but it is hard to see this as anything but a double standard.

Circling the wagons in this way not only makes it difficult for the media to do its job, but it also risks reporters appearing complicit in not reporting the information.

Playing such games, therefore, diminishes trust in two institutions that should strive to be above reproach.

Postby Thomas » Thu Jul 21, 2016 1:41 pm

A court appearance today for a police officer whose son is serving time for abusing children.

Constable Mark Lund will be in court in Midland, facing a charge of Obstruction of Justice.

His son, Shayne, is in the midst of a process to decide whether he should be declared a long-term sex offender. He pleaded guilty last year to charges involving child pornography and sex abuse. Several children were assaulted by the younger Lund, with the help of two young women who were babysitters in the Midland and Orillia area.

Constable Mark Lund has been an OPP officer for 27 years and was charged after an investigation by the OPP Professional Standards Bureau. Police are not detailing why he has been charged, but will only say that at the time of the alleged incident, Lund was off-duty.

(Midland) - An obstruction of justice charge against an OPP officer was dropped by the Crown in Midland court.

Police never revealed why Constable Mark Lund was charged.

His lawyer told CTV there wasn't enough evidence for a conviction.

CTV quotes the OPP as saying Lund remains a member of the force.

Lund is the father of Shayne Lund, who was recently declared a dangerous offender and is in prison for sex crimes against children.

Obstruction charge dropped against OPP officer Mark Lund

Postby Thomas » Sat Oct 29, 2016 11:14 am

MIDLAND – An obstruction-of-justice charge against Mark Lund has been dropped.

Brendan Crawley, senior co-ordinator of media relations with the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, confirmed the charge was withdrawn Oct. 27 in Midland.

“The Crown has an ongoing obligation to assess the strength of a case throughout a prosecution,” he said. “It is duty-bound to either stay or withdraw the charges if there is no reasonable prospect of conviction, or if it is not in the public interest to proceed.”

Lund, a Southern Georgian Bay OPP constable, was charged in June after an investigation by the provincial force’s professional standards bureau.

Police indicated the Penetanguishene resident, an OPP officer for 27 years, was not on duty at the time of the alleged incident.

Insp. Andrew Ferguson, commander of the local OPP detachment, said he would not be commenting on the case.

Lund is the father of Shayne Lund, who pleaded guilty last year to 34 sex offences, including making child pornography and committing bestiality. On Oct. 19, he was deemed a dangerous offender and jailed indefinitely.

Neither the OPP nor the Crown have said whether or not the charges against Mark Lund were related to his son’s case.
