A former Lambton OPP officer was fined $1,500 in Sarnia court Tuesday for impaired driving.

Carman J. Bressette, 53, of Sarnia pleaded guilty to the offence in Lambton Shores March 21.

Bressette had retired during the past two years after nearly 30 years on the job.

On March 21 at 8 p.m. an OPP officer stopped a pick-up truck after it went onto the road's gravel shoulder and then crossed the centre line.

Bressette was the driver and, when stopped, he smelled of alcohol, his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet, the court heard.

Bressette, who represented himself, admitted the facts.

No breath samples were obtained following Bressette's arrest.

Bressette had been charged with failing to provide a breath sample, but the charge was withdrawn following his plea to impaired driving. He had no previous criminal record.

Michael Murdoch, a Crown attorney from Goderich, handled the prosecution.

Bressette had clearly indicated months ago that he would be pleading guilty, said Murdoch who requested a $1,500 fine.

Bressette said he would accept whatever fine was imposed and wanted to get on with his life.

The minimum fine is $1,000, but Bressette had put others at risk, said Justice Mark Hornblower as he imposed the $1,500 fine and a one-year driving ban.

Prior to the commencement of the case, Hornblower asked Murdoch and Bressette if they believed the Lambton County judge had any conflict of interest in hearing the case. Both said no.
