Retired OPP officer facing sex charges

A former police officer is facing a number of charges, including four related to alleged sexual offences dating to 2009.

Jim Hewitt, 70, a retired OPP constable, was arrested last month on the strength of the sexual assault allegations. Two of the charges he is facing are for sexual assault. An additional charge deals with a sexual offence against a young person, while another is for a sexual offence against a person younger than 16.

He was also charged with three offences related to having a firearm with him, including storing a firearm without a lawful excuse, having a loaded firearm and possession for a purpose dangerous to the public peace.

His first court appearance was Feb. 29 and he was released on a $10,000 bond following a March 4 bail hearing. He is in the custody of a surety and has a number of conditions he must abide by.

Orillia OPP did not issue a press release on the matter and would not comment when contacted.

A publication ban is in place on certain details of the case.

Hewitt will be in Orillia court April 5 for the matter to be spoken to.
