SIU have charged Constable Scott Hearnden with one count of assault causing bodily harm after an incident in July 2014.

An Ontario Provincial Police officer has been charged with assault after an Oshawa man, 19, suffered a concussion after an incident on Highway 401, following a probe by the Special Investigations Unit.

On July 1, the man was travelling southbound on Highway 400 just before 12:30 a.m. and began to experience car troubles.

He stopped his car on the south shoulder of Highway 401, just east of Jane St.

Two OPP officers were dispatched to the scene for assistance and during their interaction, the man was injured and later diagnosed with a concussion, according to a statement from the SIU.

OPP Constable Scott Hearnden is facing one count of assault causing bodily harm.

Hearnden is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Feb. 10, 2016.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Man suffered concussion after interaction with police

An Ontario Provincial Police officer has been charged with assault related to a Canada Day incident that left a 19-year-old Oshawa man with a concussion.

The Special Investigations Unit, the province's police watchdog, charged OPP Const. Scott Hearnden with assault causing bodily harm.

The incident happened on July 1, before 12:30 a.m., when the 19-year-old man was driving south on Hwy. 400. The SIU said he began to experience car trouble and stopped on the south shoulder in the eastbound collector lanes of Hwy. 401, east of Jane Street.

The provincial Special Investigations Unit has charged an OPP constable with assault in relation to a nighttime incident that occurred on the shoulder of Highway 401 last summer.

The SIU says that prior to 12:30 a.m. on July 1, a 19-year-old Oshawa man was driving south on Highway 400 when he started to experience car trouble.

He pulled his car over on the south shoulder of the eastbound collector lanes of Highway 401, east of Jane Street, a short while later.

The SIU says two OPP officers attended the scene of the breakdown.

During their interaction, the motorist was injured and later diagnosed with a concussion, the SIU says.

Const. Scott Hearnden is facing one count of assault causing bodily harm.

He is scheduled to appear in court at 1000 Finch Avenue West sometime on Feb. 10, 2016.

The SIU is called in to investigate any incident involving death,, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault involving police.
