SIMCOE - An eight-year veteran of the Norfolk OPP has been charged with three counts of assault.
A complaint was lodged with the OPP Wednesday. Following an investigation by the Huron County OPP crime unit, charges were laid on Thursday.
The OPP have no plans to release the name of the accused.
“There’s a victim involved and that could identify the victim,” Sgt. David Rektor, head of communications for the OPP’s West Region, said Friday. “That’s the procedure we follow when a similar situation involves a civilian. We’re not trying to hide anything. The name will be available when the matter comes up in court.”
The accused will answer the charges at the Norfolk County court house Oct. 6. Until then, he has been given administrative duties at Norfolk OPP headquarters in Simcoe.
Rektor said the accused was off duty when the alleged assaults occurred. A parallel investigation by the OPP’s Professional Standards Bureau is also underway.
The Norfolk OPP turned the matter over to the Huron County OPP to avoid any perception of bias. Rektor said it is standard procedure to have an outside police service investigate complaints of this sort involving active-duty officers.
