Ottawa OPP officer charged with shoplifting at Walmart

Ottawa OPP officer charged with shoplifting, resisting arrest at Walmart

Ottawa OPP Const. Dennis Hill won’t be patrolling the Queensway any time soon after his own police force arrested him while he was on medical leave for rehab.

Hill’s leave took a rapid turn on June 22, when police allege he tried to steal electronics from his local Walmart in Carleton Place. And when he was apprehended, police allege that he resisted arrest.

Hill, 37, has been charged by Lanark County OPP with theft and resisting arrest. The officer is scheduled to appear in court in August.

Unlike other shoplifting and resist-arrest cases, the OPP did not issue a press release about the arrest of one of their own.

Hill is also facing internal charges under the Police Services Act. The internal charges will be dealt with after the officer’s criminal prosecution.

The criminal charges have not been tested or proved in court.

It’s the second time in two years that an OPP Queensway officer has found himself on the wrong side of the law.

Earlier this year, the Citizen reported that OPP Const. Darren Zorn had to submit to random drug testing for the rest of his career as part of an internal penalty levied against him for smoking crack cocaine and hanging around a known criminal.

Zorn, a veteran motorcycle cop, was quietly demoted from first-class constable to third class when he pleaded guilty to discreditable conduct.

Zorn resigned as the local branch president of the OPP Association police union after he was caught trying to buy crack in the ByWard Market in 2012.

Zorn was spared criminal charges even though internal affairs interrupted his drug buy, in which he gave his then-girlfriend $100 to get the drugs.

Zorn was also spared charges by Ottawa city police when they responded to an apartment where they found the officer with the same girlfriend, and he appeared to have been smoking crack. The officers recognized him and decided against pursuing criminal charges, and instead reported him to his OPP superiors.

At his internal-affairs hearing, the presiding officer chastised Zorn for violating his oath of office and supporting “gun and gang violence” by purchasing crack.
