Earlier today, officers from Red Lake OPP were conducting a RIDE check on Hwy. 125 just west of Dellenor Road in Red Lake. At approximately 11:05 p.m. officers checked a vehicle and discovered the driver had been drinking.

The driver provided a breath sample into the roadside screening device and registered a fail. The driver was arrested and transported to the Red Lake detachment for breath tests.

As a result of the investigation Const. Caitlyn Van Straalen, a six-year member of the OPP currently assigned to Red Lake Detachment was arrested and charged with Drive Over 80 mgs of Alcohol in 100 ml of Blood contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.

She will be restricted to non-operational duties pending her scheduled appearance in Red Lake Criminal Court June 5, 2014.

Red Lake RIDE leads to arrest of OPP officer

Red Lake, Ont. -- A recent police RIDE checkpoint led to one of their own officers being charged in this Northwestern Ontario town.

Officials with the OPP say they set up the RIDE checkpoint on Highway 125, just west of Dellenor Road in Red Lake.

That led to the arrest of OPP Const. Caitlyn Van Straalen, a six-year veteran with the provincial force.

The officer will be restricted to non-operational duties pending her scheduled appearance in a Red Lake courtroom on June 5.

The accused faces a driving under the influence charge.

Superintendent's Daughter Charged

A Red Lake OPP officer is in some hot water. The Ontario Provincial Police say they were conducting a RIDE Check stop on the weekend. They pulled over a vehicle and discovered the driver had been drinking.

Constable Caitlyn Van Straalen, a 6-year member of the police force and the daughter of OPP superintendent Ron Van Straalen, is charged. The OPP say she will be restricted to non-operational duties until her first court appearance on June 5th.
