SIU Charges OPP Officer

Grey County OPP officer charged with dangerous driving after crash with snowmobile.

(West Grey) - The province's Special Investigations Unit has charged a Grey County OPP officer.

Constable James Hunter has been charged with dangerous driving.

The charge is the result of an investigation by the SIU into a crash involving a snowmobile and an OPP cruiser on the West Back Line in West Grey on March 3rd.

It happened after the snowmobiler did not stop at a RIDE check.

A 26 year old Chatsworth man sustained a fracture to his upper sternum and suffered partially collapsed lungs after the crash.

SIU Director Ian Scott says their investigation shows there are reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence.

Constable Hunter will appear in Walkerton court on September 9th to answer to the charge.

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - A dangerous driving charge has been laid against an OPP officer after a probe by the province's Special Investigations Unit.

SIU director Ian Scott says he has reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence in relation to injuries sustained by a 26-year-old man earlier this year.

The SIU says OPP officers were conducting an impaired driver spot check on March 3 in Markdale, Ont., about 100 km west of Barrie, when a snowmobile driver caught their attention and an officer pursued him in a police car.

The officer then collided with the snowmobile, whose driver suffered severe injuries as a result of the crash, including a fractured upper sternum and partially collapsed lungs.

OPP Constable James Hunter is facing one charge of dangerous driving and is set to appear in court Sept. 9.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

A crash in March between an OPP cruiser and a snowmobile has led to a criminal charge against the police officer who was involved.

It happened west of Markdale, near Barhead on the West Back Line. The crash caused serious injuries to a 26-year-old Chatsworth Township man, who suffered partially collapsed lungs and a broken sternum.

The Special Investigations Unit has wrapped up its probe into the incident. Const. James Hunter will appear in court in September to answer to a charge of dangerous driving.

Charges Dismissed for OPP Officer

Judge dismisses dangerous driving charge against Grey County OPP officer

(Newmarket) - A charge of dangerous driving against a Grey County OPP officer has been dismissed by a judge in a Newmarket court.

Constable James Hunter was charged after the province's Special Investigations Unit looked into a crash involving a snowmobile in March of 2013.

That crash happened on West Back Line in West Grey when an OPP cruiser collided with a snowmobile.

OPP say the collision happened when the snowmobiler did not stop at a RIDE check.

A 26 year old Chatsworth man sustained a fracture to his upper sternum and suffered partially collapsed lungs after the crash.

Although SIU Director Ian Scott said there was reasonable grounds for a charge to be laid against Hunter, the judge hearing the case decided to dismiss the charge.

His trial took place in a Walkerton court in May, and the decision was handed down in Newmarket court on Wednesday.
