Most municipalities will see OPP costs increase

Obscenely high and unsustainable policing costs. OPP bills are destroying communities its officers are supposed to protect. Apparent self-interest is cloaked in the guise of public safety needs. Where is the political outrage while OPP costs continue to climb? Who is going to bring policing costs in this province under control?

Most municipalities will see OPP costs increase over five years

TORONTO – The governing Liberals say most municipalities that use Ontario Provincial Police for local law enforcement will see their policing costs go up over the next few years.

Community Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi says the OPP is moving ahead with a new billing model that will clarify and more evenly distribute costs to municipalities.

He says 207 municipalities will see an increase in policing costs, while 115 will see a decrease.

Naqvi says the increases will be $100 or less per property, while the decreases will be about $75 per property.

The minister says it will be phased in over five years, starting in January.

The Association of Ontario Municipalities says many communities are concerned by the rising costs of policing, particularly due to higher wages for officers.
