Bluewater OPP Costing Complaints

Obscenely high and unsustainable policing costs. OPP bills are destroying communities its officers are supposed to protect. Apparent self-interest is cloaked in the guise of public safety needs. Where is the political outrage while OPP costs continue to climb? Who is going to bring policing costs in this province under control?

Bluewater OPP Costing Complaints

The C-A-O for Bluewater says a meeting with Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Madeleine Meilleur at last week’s ROMA conference went as well as could be expected, but he doubts they changed anyone’s mind.

Steve McAuley says the OPP seems determined to stay with a flat fee across the province rather than factoring in the actual policing needs of a community. And McAuley points out by the OPP’s own figures the policing needs in Bluewater have declined each of the last five years. About 21-hundred of the 52-hundred homes in Bluewater are seasonal cottages that require very little police service.

He says the Minister suggested the flat fee could be reduced slightly but he doen’t believe any reduction would be enough to make a difference in Bluewater. He notes Bluewater currently pays $725-thousand a year for policing and that would jump to $1.9-million dollars under the proposed new model.

McAuley adds the Minister heard similar complaints from other small rural municipalities throughout the day so Bluewater is clearly not alone in this situation.
