A Tweed, Ont., man has been charged with attempted murder after a shootout with OPP left him seriously injured at a hunting camp north of north of Marmora, Ont., early Friday, prompting an investigation by Ontario’s police watchdog.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Central Hastings OPP officers responded to a report of a man making threats at a remote hunting cabin in the area of Twin Sister Lakes Road, about 20 kilometres north of the village of Marmora or 70 kilometres east of Peterborough.

The SIU say when officers arrived, the man barricaded himself in the cabin.

The SIU says an officer first shot with an ARWEN, described as a”less-lethal firearm.”

The police watchdog says the man then shot at police.

“An officer shot the man with a firearm,” the SIU stated, noting it occurred just after midnight. “The man was arrested and taken to hospital via ambulance.”

As of Friday afternoon, the SIU says the man remains in hospital in Kingston.

OPP say the man suffered a non-life threatening injury.

Jason Bedore, 48, from Tweed, Ont., was arrested and charged with attempted murder using a firearm, careless use of a firearm, weapon or prohibited device or ammunition and possession of a firearm or ammunition.

Three SIU investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

Police watchdog investigating man's serious injury

Ontario's police watchdog says a provincial police officer shot a man more than once at a hunting cabin in the Marmora and Lake area north of Belleville early Friday morning.

The man was seriously injured and treated at a Kingston hospital, according to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in a social media post.

The SIU said preliminary information suggests the 48-year-old man was first struck by a round from an Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield (ARWEN), which can launch a variety of projectiles including plastic bullets, tear gas and less-lethal "batons."

The man was then shot with a firearm, the SIU said. (The ARWEN is also classified as a firearm.)

No other details are available. The SIU said a news release would follow.

The SIU invokes its mandate to investigate police conduct that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person. It can recommend criminal charges.

The scene is about 50 kilometres north of Belleville and about 200 from both Ottawa and Toronto. The community of Marmora is along Highway 7.

SIU investigating after man shot by officer following police

Postby Thomas » Sat Dec 16, 2023 3:34 pm

A man faces multiple charges after a stand-off with police which led to him being shot and injured by police.

The SIU said in a statement that officers were called to a remote hunting cabin in the area of Twin Sister Lakes Road at about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday in the municipality of Marmora and Lake, about halfway between Ottawa and Toronto, for a man making threats.

When officers arrived, the man barricaded himself in the cabin. Police negotiators and tactical officers were sent to the scene.

The SIU says a preliminary investigation found there was an interaction with the man and police. A non-lethal weapon was shot at the man who subsequently shot towards the officers.

An officer then used a firearm to shoot the man and he was arrested and taken to hospital by ambulance.

SIU initially said the man was said to be seriously injured and was taken to a Kingston hospital. A statement by OPP said he sustained a 'non-life threatening' injury.

OPP say Jason Bedore, 48, from Tweed, Ont. has been charged with the following offences:

• Attempt to commit murder using firearm

• Careless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition

• Possession of firearm or ammunition

The man was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville.

The investigation continues by the OPP's Central Hastings Crime Unit under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch.
