City police on new beat: Officers now on duty in Cavan Monaghan township after replacing OPP

The city's police service is now on patrol in Cavan Monaghan.

The deal, reached earlier this year between the city service and the township, will see six dedicated officers assigned to the community. Cavan Monaghan, located along the southern and western edge of Peterborough County, includes the villages of Cavan, Bailieboro, and Millbrook and the hamlets of Stewart Hall, Ida, Mount Pleasant, Fraserville and Springville.

The area had been patrolled by the OPP until the change.

Cavan Monaghan Mayor Scott McFadden said the township is looking forward to having city police on hand. "It's a perfect fit for our small, close-knit community," he said.

"We want you to know that there's no call too small, no issue that we won't give attention to," said city police Chief Murray Rodd at the formal launch of the service Thursday morning at Cavan Monaghan's council chambers. The audience included members of Cavan Monaghan council, township staff, police officers, city Mayor Daryl Bennett and city councillors Dave Haacke and Dan McWilliams, who also sit on the police board.

Over the next three years, the OPP would have charged about $3,754,618 to police Cavan Monaghan while Peterborough Police would charge $3,614,622. A township staff report broke that figure down for council in March: In 2015, the OPP would cost $1,302,880 and city police $1,169,440. In 2016, the OPP would cost $1,279,851 and city police $1,204,523. In 2017, the OPP would cost $1,171,887 and city police $1,240,659.

Peterborough city police also serve Lakefield in Selwyn Township at a 2015 cost of $534,000.

City police will have an office at the township building at 988 Country Rd. 10. Six new officers were hired by city police to augment its service for the community.

"It's not just six officers," Rodd said. "You have every resource of the Peterborough Police Service available to you.

That includes community outreach. Const. John MacLeod is the new school officer at both Millbrook South Cavan Public School and North Cavan Public School in Ida.

MacLeod said Thursday he's already been visiting the schools and getting to know the communities.

Community Services Const. Andrew Hatton will be the school officer for Crestwood Secondary School. Crestwood is located on Sherbrooke St. just outside the city limits in an area that has long been policed by the OPP.

Cavan Monaghan residents are reminded by police that they should call 911 in an emergency, or 705-876-1122 for non-emergencies. In addition to regular patrol officers, the entire service is available. "We're just five minutes down the road," Rodd said.

Victim services are at 705-876-1122, ext. 268.

There are other changes that affect Cavan Monaghan residents. The city police operate a self-reporting service for non-serious vehicle collisions. That centre is located at the city police station, 500 Water St., Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's at 705-741-4400.

Other services, such as non-emergency crime reporting, a report of a concern about a person's well-being or booking a paid duty officer, can be done online at www.peterboroughpolice.com.
