When police officers are involved in incidents where someone has been seriously injured, dies or alleges sexual assault, the Special Investigations Unit has the statutory mandate to conduct independent investigations to determine whether a criminal offence took place.

SIU investigating after man in police custody fell died after being released from OPP custody in Kawartha Lakes

KAWARTHA LAKES - The Special Investigations Unit is investigating the death of a man who had been in police custody in Kawartha Lakes.

A press release issued by the SIU, states a 62-year-old man was being held in a cell at the Kawartha Lakes OPP detachment on June 1. At about 3:30 a.m. the man fell, was injured and was taken to Ross Memorial Hospital for treatment. A few hours later he returned to the detachment before being released unconditionally in the morning, the release states.

On June 2 police learned the man had been taken to RMH a second time the day before and died in hospital.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to investigate this incident. Six witness officers and one subject officer were designated. Anyone who may have information regarding this case is asked to contact the Unit at 1-800-787-8529 Ext. 1806.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

This the fifth SIU investigation of police in the Kawartha Region. The most recent investigation began after a man in custody at the East Central Correctional Centre died while being restrained at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

The SIU is currently looking into the actions of police following the death of a man inside a vehicle at the Walmart parking lot in late March in Peterborough.

As well, the SIU is investigating after one man was shot and killed by a Peterborough police officer in early April.

Most recently, a Peterborough police officer was charged with sexual assault after the SIU investigated a February incident.
