Fri Jan 30, 2015 10:39 am

OPP officer stranded for 15 minutes on side of Hwy. 400 after crashing cruiser

An OPP officer was sent to hospital early on Friday after crashing his cruiser north of Port Severn.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. on the northbound Highway 400 near Joe Kings Road.

He lost control of his car and hit the guardrail, scraping along the barrier and almost flipping the car.

The dazed officer had a difficult time telling the dispatcher where he had crashed.

He sat in his car, exposed to the elements, for 15 minutes before a passerby stopped to help.

The temperature was -13 C without the windchill.

The officer took shelter in the passerby’s car until emergency officials arrived.

He was transported to hospital after reporting back pain.

Police say the officer has since been released from hospital and is expected to be OK.

OPP officer injured in crash in Georgian Bay

Sat Jan 31, 2015 12:16 pm

An OPP officer suffered minor injuries after a cruiser hit a snowbank in Georgian Bay Township early Friday morning.

It happened just after 2:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Highway 400, between Georgian Bay Road and Crooked Bay Road.

Police say the cruiser was responding to a call when the vehicle hit icy conditions, struck a snowbank and narrowly missed a rock cut.

The officer was able to get out of the car and call for help.

While the officer was waiting, a Good Samaritan stopped and kept him warm until emergency crews arrived.

The officer was taken to Georgian Bay General Hospital in Midland, treated and released.

The road was closed for more than five hours while police investigated.
