MOOSONEE, Ont. - A veteran provincial police sergeant, stationed in Moosonee, has been suspended from duty after being charged with several sex offences involving a young complainant.

The accused is charged with one count each of sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching.

The nature of the charges suggest the complainant would have been younger than 16 during the time of the alleged offences.

The offences are alleged to have occurred over a period from 2000 to 2006.

Det.- Sgt. Randy Cota has been suspended from active duty with pay, police said.

Rota, 48, has been a member of the OPP since 1987.

Rota's next scheduled court appearance is March 12 at Old City Hall in Toronto.
