OTTAWA — An on-duty Ontario Provincial Police officer was charged with careless driving after he crashed his vehicle in Killaloe early Thursday morning.

Const. James Baker, 26, was charged with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

Police said the officer was driving a marked cruiser on Round Lake Road around 3:50 a.m. when his vehicle left the road and landed in a ditch.

The officer was not injured.

OPP Sgt. Kristine Rae said the cause of the crash is under investigation, but Baker was not responding to a call at the time of the crash.

Baker has been an officer with the Killaloe OPP detachment for two years.

Rae said it isn’t uncommon for on-duty police officers to face charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

“Officers get in collisions in marked force vehicles,” Rae said. “Like everybody else, they are subject to charges.”

In June 2012, Upper Ottawa Valley OPP Const. Brian Lizotte was charged with not turning safely under the Highway Traffic Act after a crash on Highway 17 in Petawawa.

The officer was driving a marked police car east on the highway when he tried to make a U-turn when he hit another vehicle.
